7 Warning Signs of a Hidden Water Leak

The leaks that cause the most damage are the ones you can't see. A pinhole in a slab line or a weeping fitting inside a wall can run for months, quietly ruining framing, flooring, and drywall — and feeding mold the whole time. Catch a hidden leak early and it's a modest repair; catch it late and you're talking about restoration contractors.

Here's what to watch for.

1. A water bill that jumped for no reason

Compare against the same month last year (usage is seasonal). A meaningful unexplained increase is the single most common way hidden leaks announce themselves.

2. The sound of water when nothing is running

A faint hiss or trickle behind a wall — most audible at night — means pressurized water is escaping somewhere. Don't talk yourself out of it; go do the meter test below.

3. Warm spots on the floor

A classic slab leak symptom: the hot line under the concrete is leaking, and the heat rises through the slab. Pets curling up on one mysterious warm patch of tile have diagnosed more slab leaks than any gadget we own.

4. Musty smells, or mold you can't explain

Mold needs moisture. A persistent earthy smell in one room, or spots appearing on a wall or baseboard, means water is getting in — from plumbing, the roof, or grading. Whichever it is, it needs finding.

5. Stains, bubbling paint, or warped flooring

Ceiling stains under an upstairs bathroom, paint that bubbles or peels low on a wall, laminate planks that swell at the seams: water is traveling along the framing and showing up downhill from the actual leak.

6. Low hot-water pressure at every fixture

If just the hot side has gone weak house-wide, the hot line may be leaking (or, in older homes, galvanized pipe is corroding shut — also worth fixing).

7. A lush green stripe in the yard

For leaks in the buried service line between meter and house: one strip of grass that's greener and softer than everything around it, or a wet spot that never dries.

The two-minute meter test

1. Turn off every fixture and appliance that uses water (don't forget ice makers and recirculation pumps).
2. Open the meter box near the street and watch the low-flow indicator — a small triangle, star, or dial.
3. If it's moving with everything off, water is leaving your system somewhere.

Shut off the valve at the house and check again: still spinning at the meter means the leak is in the buried service line; stopped means it's inside the house.
