Tank vs. Tankless Water Heaters: An Honest Comparison

We install both tank and tankless water heaters every week, so we have no horse in this race. Both are good technologies. The right answer depends on your household, your home's gas and venting setup, and how long you plan to stay. Here's the comparison we walk customers through at the kitchen table.

How each one works

A tank water heater stores 40–50 gallons hot around the clock, reheating it as it cools — even at 3 a.m. when nobody needs it. A tankless unit fires a powerful burner only when a hot tap opens, heating water on its way through. No storage, no standby loss.

Where tankless wins

Endless hot water. The classic tank problem — third shower goes cold — disappears. A properly sized tankless unit delivers hot water for as long as a tap is open.

Lifespan. Tanks last 8–12 years here; tankless units routinely run 15–20+ with annual service. Over 20 years you'd likely buy two tanks, or one tankless.

Energy use. No standby loss means less gas burned. Real-world savings vary with usage, but efficiency is meaningfully better, especially for households that use moderate amounts of hot water.

Space. A tankless unit is the size of a carry-on suitcase and hangs on the wall. Homeowners converting often gain back a garage corner or an entire closet.

Where a tank still makes sense

Upfront cost. A like-for-like tank swap is the cheapest path to hot water. Tankless conversions cost more because the install is genuinely more involved — which brings us to:

Installation complexity. Most homes converting to tankless need a larger gas line (a tankless burner draws 150,000–199,000 BTU versus ~40,000 for a tank) and new venting. This is normal and we do it constantly, but it's real cost that a low teaser quote often hides.

Simplicity. A tank is a simple machine. If your budget is tight and your household rarely runs out of hot water, a quality tank installed to code is an entirely rational choice — and we'll tell you so.

The maintenance fine print

Our region's hard water scales up tankless heat exchangers. An annual descale/flush (about an hour of service) keeps efficiency up and protects the warranty.
