What a Sewer Camera Inspection Reveals — Before You Buy or Dig

Your sewer lateral — the buried pipe carrying everything from your house to the city main — is the most expensive pipe you own and the only one you can't look at. A camera inspection fixes that: a self-leveling camera head on a flexible push rod travels the line while we watch, record, and mark exactly where any problem sits, and how deep.

Here's when that half-hour of footage earns its keep many times over.

Buying a home? This is not optional

A standard home inspection checks fixtures and water pressure. It does not go inside the sewer line. In the older neighborhoods of Roseville, Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks, Carmichael, and Sacramento, laterals are commonly 50–80 years old and made of clay or cast iron — materials with well-earned retirement plans:

• Clay pipe joints every few feet, each one an invitation to tree roots
• Cast iron that rusts and flakes from the inside, snagging everything that passes
• Old repairs done to old standards, or never permitted at all

A failed lateral is a five-figure repair. The camera inspection that reveals it costs a few hundred dollars and turns the finding into negotiating information before you own the problem. We provide recorded video and a written summary that works in escrow.

The recurring clog that isn't bad luck

If the same drain — or worse, the whole house — backs up every few months, the line is telling you something is physically wrong inside it. The camera shows which one:

• Root intrusion: roots enter at joints and cracks, then mat into a net that catches paper and waste. Cutting them clears the symptom; they always grow back through the same openings.
• A belly: a sagged section where water stands and solids settle. Bellies don't clear themselves — the fix is regrading that section of pipe.
• Offsets: pipe sections shifted out of alignment by soil movement or roots, creating a ledge that snags debris.
• Scale and grease: old cast iron gets barnacled with rust scale that grabs everything.
• Collapse: the end stage. Usually announced by sewage backing up into tubs and showers.

Without the camera, you're paying to clear the same blockage on a subscription. With it, you know exactly what the fix is, where it is, and how big it is — and we can quote it precisely instead of guessing.

Before any sewer work — including ours

We won't quote a sewer repair without camera footage, and we'd encourage you to hold any contractor to the same standard. The camera and locator tell us the depth and position of the damage, which means a spot repair can be exactly that — a surgical dig instead of an exploratory trench across your yard.
